Diminishing Comfort

Acrylic Painting on Canvas

130.3 x 97.0 (cm)

I was inspired by painter Lee Price’s “Cocoa Puffs,” through which I could rethink the relationship between a woman and food.

“Honbap” is a combination of the Korean words honja (alone) and bap (food), and is a term that has become popularized as society continues to attach stigmas to the act of eating alone. The girl in the painting is voluntarily “honbaping,” expressing her comfort and pleasure as she dines alone on a bench. I created this piece so that the viewer is visually confronted by the beauty, comfort, and defiance of an independent act, no matter how small.
